Career Progression at Sheffield Haworth

When you join our global team we invest in the careers of our employees to maximise everyone’s potential.  We provide the training and guidance you need to develop both personally and professionally and work with you to maximise your potential whether you are just starting out or are more established in your career.

We have a strong track record in developing and nurturing internal talent, with many of our Managing Directors having worked their way up through the organisation from Associate level.

Associate Forum

We believe that our Associates are the future leaders of our business.  Inclusion is key to our success so we ensure that all members of staff feel included and valued.  Part of our vision is to be a challenger brand around people and change and we feel passionately about helping our people exceed their goals and maximise their potential.  To enable us to develop our Associates into future leaders, we have set up an Associate Forum in which we regularly hold Associate Town Halls across our global offices.  In this open format, Associates are encouraged to share what they are working on, what techniques have been working well and what they are finding challenging.  These meetings are an opportunity to come together and learn from each other.  Additionally, Sheffield Haworth host social events especially for the Associates encouraging them to come together outside of the office so that everyone gets to know each other better in a more informal setting.

Learning & Development

We are one team working towards a common goal to help organisations exceed their goals and for people to achieve their potential.  Your development is instrumental to the continued development and growth of Sheffield Haworth.  We believe in taking the time to nurture and develop our team to create future leaders for our business.

Our training programmes are designed specifically for the stage you are at in your career, whether that is an Associate, mid-level or senior management.  For those starting out their careers, we have crafted an Associate programme which is designed to motivate, challenge and ultimately equip you with all the skills required to become a successful search consultant or researcher.  The programme covers several modules delivered by our Managing Directors and gives you direct access to seek advice and guidance.  We also work closely with the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants to provide specific training for our employees.

In addition to regular training we conduct quarterly appraisals followed by a more formal annual appraisal, giving you the opportunity to set and agree on objectives, share any concerns or requests for additional training and to seek feedback on individual progress from your team.  At the annual appraisal, promotion plans and specific development objectives are put in place so that everyone is clear on what their career trajectory looks like along with clear expectations from both sides.

Culture & Inclusion

At Sheffield Haworth we believe in providing an equal and inclusive working environment for all of our employees.  As a challenger consultancy around people and change, we encourage diversity of thought among our people, actively engaging in conversations on how we can continue to evolve our organisation to make it as inclusive as possible.

As a global business, we embrace and respect different cultures and backgrounds.  This encourages diverse perspectives and different ways of doing things which reflects the needs of our customers and allows our business to be more agile and adaptable to different markets.  We are also proud to be a disability confident employer.

Sheffield Haworth is a values driven organisation, providing an inspiring and motivating place to work which challenges our employees and helps them realise their potential.

Dedicated mentor

From day one you’ll be assigned a mentor, typically a senior member of staff from a different team whom you can have regular catch ups with, bounce ideas off, ask questions and express any concerns you may have.  They will provide you with guidance, share their own experiences and learnings and can advise you on how to navigate your own career.

Giving Back

As an organisation, we feel it is important that we give back to all communities.

We are extremely proud of the work we do to support charitable causes, whether that is through donations, fundraising, volunteering our time or funding our employees to undertake activities. We encourage our staff to get involved, giving them an additional two days annually to be used for charitable activities either through one of our corporate charities or one of their own choosing.

Previous fundraising activities have included a London to Paris bike ride which raised almost £15,000 for Cancer Research UK and the Three Peaks Challenge in 2019 which involved walking the three highest Peaks in the UK in just over 24 hours raising £30,000 for Cancer Research.  Throughout the year, we operate a calendar of events and activities to support much needed causes.

In addition, we also support interns and work experience students, giving them the opportunity to gain experience of being in a busy, professional setting.  We aim to give them as much exposure to the different parts of our business as possible, enabling them to learn key skills through real-time projects that will help them academically and professionally.

We also undertake business mentoring with young people from low socio economic backgrounds through our partnership with Envision.  Find out more.

Jonny Warner, Senior Consultant, Corporate Officers Practice, Hong Kong

Five years ago I would have never imagined I would be sitting here in Hong Kong but when the firm offered the opportunity to ‘jump in at the deep end’ and develop as a consultant in a totally new market it was an opportunity too good to miss.

Sarah Harte, Managing Director & Co-Head , Global Markets, New York

As an Associate at Sheffield Haworth you will benefit from a clear developmental plan whether that is on a route to become a Consultant or to hone and refine your skills to become a career researcher.  The Associates training program is also ever developing and allows Associates from all over the world to be able to get to know and learn from each other regardless of the industry sector they may be sitting in.

Andrew Thompson, Managing Director, Wealth & Asset Management Practice, New York

Sheffield Haworth has a very entrepreneurial spirit and genuinely gives people opportunities at any age and stage of their careers. What is unique about the company is the access you get as an Associate to senior leaders in the business who are more than willing to share their knowledge and experiences with you - something which you don’t get at a larger firm.
