Meet the Team – Andre Martin-Comrie, Consulting Solutions

In our fourth interview in the ‘Meet The Team’ series, we introduce Andre Martin-Comrie.  Andre joined Sheffield Haworth in 2015 in the Wealth & Asset Management Consulting Solutions Practice.  Working with a range of clients from small investment firms to global investment managers, Andre is a keen advocate of increasing diversity in the asset management sector.  A sporty member of the team, Andre is on a mission in 2019 to complete 12 endurance challenges in 12 months.

Tell us a little about your role within the Consulting Solutions team and the types of clients you work with?

I have worked in the Consulting Solutions team since February 2015. In this time the team has grown and developed similarly to many of the clients we work with. My focus is on the wealth and asset management sector, working with clients ranging from small foreign investment firms looking to establish themselves in Europe to global multi-national investment managers expanding their product range.

What kind of assignments do you usually work on with your clients?

I work on a variety of assignments in the front office including partnering with heads of Distribution and Business Development on marketing and product strategies. The middle and back office assignments I focus on typically cover audit, risk and compliance. The key component and driver for these requirements is change and transformation. I have also established myself as an advocate of businesses increasing diversity in the asset management sector and have often been approached about helping managers identify and attract diverse talent; particularly in the front office.

What are some of the challenges your clients are facing?

There are three key challenges I see across the industry.  Firstly, there is the ongoing trend of M&A activity as margin pressures drive the sector to consolidate and specialise. Secondly, I think one of the most urgent challenges our clients face is increasing the levels of diversity in their business:  the investment industry has been in the spotlight for not only its lack of gender diversity in senior roles but a lack of ethnic diversity too. Thirdly, more and more managers have been looking to develop their responsible investing capabilities. Identifying talent in the ESG space continues to be challenging.

Tell us about a recent assignment where you successfully placed a candidate/team and how did they have a positive impact on the organisation?

I recently placed an Interim Head of Legal into a boutique asset management business in London. The previous Head was exiting unexpectedly which would have left the business without a legal specialist at a critical time. Being able to quickly identify an experienced legal professional to lead the team allowed the business to continue its expansion plans uninterrupted.  This is also a great example of how clients benefit from our collaborative approach at Sheffield Haworth:  I was able to address the immediate need for an interim solution and my colleague is now running the Search to appoint a permanent hire into the role.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

When the perfect opportunity is identified for an individual who I have kept in contact with for a long time.

What are your interests outside of work?

For the last 5 years I have taken on several endurance challenges to raise money for a number of great causes. This year I have decided to take on 12 challenges! This #12medalsin12months challenge has included running the Brooklyn Spring Half Marathon, completing the Olympic VeloPark Duathlon and in September I’ll be aiming to summit the 3 highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours then running the Great North Run…all in one weekend! Away from running and cycling I enjoy following my beloved Newcastle United, listening to podcasts and spending time with my family.
