Meet the Team – Alex Horner, Insurance Practice

Alex is a Director in Sheffield Haworth’s Insurance Practice.  He works with clients enabling them to effect change and transformation through the provision of agile consulting solutions as well as providing executive level interim support at both ExCo and Board. With 15 years in the industry Alex has a notable track record of delivering senior assignments within a range of Life and Non-Life Insurance firms, also across several different functional and specialist areas, including CEO, CIO, CFO and COO level.

Tell us a little about your role within the Consulting Solutions team and the types of clients you work with.

I joined Sheffield Haworth’s Insurance practice in May 2019, working alongside Ben Johnson. I lead our coverage of Life and Health Insurers within the UK & Europe.

What kind of assignments do you usually work on with your clients?

I help my clients to manage business critical gaps in their organisations and to deliver change & transformation programmes.  Typical assignments are therefore either an immediate need for an Executive Interim at Board, Exco or Head of Department level or for a Consultant to shape and lead a large scale business transformation.  The need for an Executive Interim could be across a broad range of functional areas including finance, operations, technology, cyber, risk, procurement, HR or legal.  Transformation initiatives could also occur across a range of different business areas:  Finance Change is a constantly evolving landscape within the Life and Health market as is the need to comply with ongoing and new regulations.

What are some of the challenges your clients are facing?

Digital transformation is a fairly consistent challenge for my clients and is an area that the Life Insurance sector is perhaps a little behind in compared to other sectors.  A lot of firms want to be ‘digital’ but don’t necessarily know what that means or what would be required to change from their current operating model.  We are now seeing more competition from up and coming Insurtech firms trying to shake up the Insurance industry with more efficient and cheaper digital solutions.

Tell us about a recent assignment where you successfully placed a candidate/team and how did they have a positive impact on the organisation?

I recently worked with a Health Insurer to enable them to better understand where they were in terms of their legacy data and how they use it.  It was a programme of multiple workstreams that aimed to produce operational efficiencies and to help the firm better understand their customers and the wider market they operated in.   One of our consultants was responsible for defining the entire Change agenda and the other led the Data Science workstream.   The successful programme was a game changer for the client.

What are your interests outside of work?

I enjoy competing in obstacle races (Grail Quest Race, Tough Guy, Spartan etc.) I also love track days and have four (old) fully race prepared hot hatches in the family which I’ve raced all over the country.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I enjoy the process of getting to know a new client and developing the relationship to become a genuine partner and trusted advisor to that business.  Through my established networks of executive interims and consultants I enjoy connecting my clients with the external talent they need to help them achieve their objectives and goals, driving change and having a positive impact on the organisation as a whole.
