Key Senior Hiring Trends Within Global Insurance, August 2021

Welcome to our new look insurance senior hires data which now features interactive charts and a deeper dive into selected hires over the previous month.

All our insurance sector hiring data covers senior level appointments, moves and promotions, sourced from TALNT, Sheffield Haworth’s proprietary AI-driven platform for tracking executive moves, which gathers and analyses data from 300+ reputable public sources around the globe.

Of the 50 senior global insurance hires tracked this month, the ones that received the most interest from our subscribers on TALNT were:

  • Adam Mullen, who has joined independent reinsurance broker BMS Re as executive director to oversee the launch of the company’s new Bermuda operations. Prior to this position, Muller worked as a reinsurance consultant at Attestor Capital, where he oversaw non-executive consulting assignments for acquisitions, business planning and strategy.
  • Carl Hess, who has been appointed the new president and the next CEO of US-based broking giant Willis Towers Watson. Hess was the head of investment, risk and reinsurance business at WTW. He has immediately assumed the role of president and will replace outgoing CEO John Haley in January 2022.
  • Kirsten Beasley, who has been appointed head of Willis Towers Watson’s Bermuda office, where she will focus on Bermuda placements in casualty, property, financial lines, and healthcare lines. Beasley has been head of healthcare broking in North America for WTW since 2018, having joined the company as a Senior Vice President in 2016.
  • Wendy L Harrington has joined the board of directors at the US-based InsurTech broking platform Accelerant. Harrington is the Chief Data and AI Office at TIAA, where she Nuveen Labs, whose mission is to develop data, analytics, and AI to fuel superior investment capabilities. Prior to joining Nuveen, Harrington had an impressive track record in fintech.

 

In addition, here are some senior appointments that caught my eye in August:

  • In August, Swiss Re announced the appointment of Jason Richards as president and CEO of the Reinsurance Business Unit in the UK and Ireland, effective 1 January 2022. Richards will be responsible for “driving profitable growth of the UK & Ireland reinsurance portfolio and continuing to strengthen Swiss Re’s influence and position in the London market”.
  • Oneglobal Broking has launched a new office in the Netherlands, and appointed Alex van der Wyck as CEO. Prior to this, van der Wyck was CEO of Aon Indonesia and Head of M&A Solutions for APAC, where he spent over 12 years, having built his career at Marsh in the Netherlands and the Middle East.
  • Insurance group Hiscox has recruited Helen Rose to serve as chief financial officer of Hiscox London Market and Hiscox Syndicates Limited. Rose has more than a decade of insurance industry experience, including time spent at Aspen Group where she was insurance CFO, UK finance chief, and most recently, chief accounting officer. She will join Hiscox in February of next year.
  • Zurich Middle East Life has named long-time Zurich executive Reena Vivek as its Interim CEO. Vivek has worked at Zurich insurance group entities since 2012, prior to which Vivek worked at Metlife, American Life Insurance Company and also Citibank. The company has said her appointmet will help effect a smooth transition from outgoing Zurich ME CEO Walter Jopp.
  • iA Financial Group has announced the appointment of Pierre Miron to the new position of Executive Vice-President and Chief Transformation Officer. According to iA’s President and CEO, “The challenges we face and will continue to face are as numerous as they are varied. They also all represent opportunities to be seized, and that is exactly what we intend to do.”

Gender balance of senior global insurance hires, August 2021

Of the new senior appointments we tracked this month, the average global gender split was 32% women and 68% men. Broken down by region, we see that almost 37% of new EMEA appointments in August were women. 35% of new appointments in the Americas were women, while all the appointments tracked by TALNT in AsiaPAC were men.
